Networkers' Letter

Dear Networkers

Service is an activity which is paramount to the life of those who are in contact with the higher levels of Nature, who are in contact with their Soul, and who have vision. Vision is the result of contact with the Self. True service is the expression of the radiation of Beingness, of one's Purpose.

When a person is in contact with and has an awareness of the Self, he is impressed with the urge to serve; a service which expands the consciousness of humanity and leads them to the future. The future is a vision which your Soul has for you and which the Great Life has for humanity. The vision serves as a magnet, a magnet which creates a response from those who have been affected by the vision. True service causes expansion of consciousness.

Each individual who has an urge to serve necessarily needs to prepare himself for service; he needs to cultivate the necessary skills, create the time for his labor, establish goals and develop a plan, all of which will then be used as he dedicates himself to the Purpose of his service.

As you read about the science of service, and the call of service in this issue of Meditation Monthly International, consider the Teachings of the Tibetan about the Faculty of discrimination in service: He who considers that he can attempt all things, who balks not at aught that happens his way, who rushes wildly in where wiser ones refrain, who considers he has capacity for that which arises, who brings zeal but no brains to bear on this problem of service, but dissipates force; he renders oft destructive action, he wastes the time of wiser and great ones in the correcting of his well meant mistakes, and he serves no end but his own desires. The reward of good intention may be his, but it is frequently offset by the results of foolish action. He who serves with discrimination who realizes wisely his own niche, great or small in the general scheme; who calculates soberly his mental and intellectual capacity, his emotional caliber and his physical assets, and then with the sum of the whole, applies himself to fill the niche.

"He serves discrimination, who judges with the aid of his Higher Self and the Master what is the nature and the measure of the problem to be solved, and is not guided by the well meant, though often ill-judged suggestions, requests and demands of his fellow servers."

Shanti

The Science of Service
The Practice of Living Ethics

In Discipleship in the New Age, Volume II, we read: "Service, I would remind you, is a scientific process, calling forth all the soul powers into full expression on the physical plane. It is service which causes a divine manifestation or what you call a divine incarnation."1

Later, in the same volume, it states: "You will all awaken some day to the realization that the Science of Service is of greater importance than the Science of Meditation, because it is the effort and the strenuous activity of the serving disciple which evokes the soul powers, makes meditation an essential requirement, and is the mode _ ahead of all others _ which invokes the Spiritual Triad, brings about the intensification of the spiritual life, forces the building of the antahkarana, and leads in a graded series of renunciations to the Great Renunciation, which sets the disciple free for all eternity."2

But exactly why do we call service a "scientific process" or a "science?" The dictionary defines "science" as "a branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and showing the operation of general laws."3 So our question may be restated: "Does the process of increasingly radiating your True Self through your personality have a basis in fact or truth, and does it proceed on the basis of laws or rules?"

Most definitely the evolution of the Monad has a basis in fact and truth, and can be attested to by the examples of the Great Ones who have preceded us, set the example, and now light the Way for those who follow. Similarly, this evolution, this divine manifestation or incarnation, is governed by laws and rules, such as the Law of Karma and the Law of Love.

But just because we call service a "science," we should not conclude that it is mastered by reading a scholarly book, attending a lecture, or sitting in a classroom. We accomplish nothing if we merely write a "term paper" about service, and then put it away!

Agni Yoga is the yoga of living ethics, and the Science of Service includes the practice of that which increasingly becomes understood. The "strenuous activity of the serving disciple" demonstrates that our beliefs are being lived, not just being read about and talked about. As the old saying goes, "Actions speak louder than words!" But the Science of Service should not be thought to be only a collection of "acts of service." In The Psyche and Psychism, Volume II, we read: "Service is not an activity, but a radiation of soul virtues, soul qualities, and eventually, the radiation of your true Self."4

"Random acts of kindness" may be a fitting subject for a best-seller, but are of little lasting value to the pilgrim on the Path. In fact, this practice may be harmful, because by invoking energies irregularly, the individual is not able to consistently absorb, scientifically adjust to, and radiate those energies.

The Self is the Monad, the Spark of God, Spirit materialized; so, service means the radiation of one's Inner Divinity, in every aspect of one's life. Service, therefore, gives us a glimpse of that which, in its essence, is the beauty of the Monad.

The New Humanity Centre, Kalamata, Greece
Networking in Kalamata, Greece

"Today we witness the crisis of humany (lower self), our personal humanity, which, for more than 25,000 years, has brought into the worldÑwars, hatred, slavery and untold misery. This has been due to [our] ignorance of our true selves and our widening separateness from the One Reality...Let us now, therefore, start to do much spiritual and intuitional research and development as to reveal the will and purpose of our Higher Selves, to become enlightened [through] our study of the Ageless Wisdom Teachings and also be inspired [by] the revealed truths from the Masters of the Wisdom. Then we can use these treasure troves of Wisdom and Love and Light towards living a more glorious and godlike life." - From Enhumanity, The Forum of the Higher Self, Vol. 3

The New Humanity Centre in Kalamata, Greece, is an international center where spiritual learning and sharing take place. "It is," writes Enhumanity editor Harry Vacal, "a coordinating center for several New World Service Activities:"

*The Ensophion of Humanity (pictured here) - is a developing educational institution, projected eventually to become a Planetary Wisdom School for the sharing of the Ageless Wisdom. The school will function and serve as a World Correspondence School through essay lessons bearing upon various subjects of Ensophia Teachings. [Ensophia is a term used by the New Humanity Centre that stands for, explains Vacal, "The New Wisdom of Life that is esoteric, exoteric and holistic, that is applicable...for fulfilling the needs and divine aspirations of Humanity in the New Aquarian Age." - Ed.] Presently the school also serves as a New World Conference Centre for international group conferences, seminars and workshops .

*The Enhumanity Library - is an international library for esoteric philosophical studies and research. The library contains 2,000 English and Hellenic books of inspiration and wisdom.

*The Retreat Centre - is a service open year-round to visitors from abroad. It provides a quiet facility in serene and beautiful surroundings for the practice of meditation and the study of the Ageless Wisdom Teachings. Vacal writes, "The spiritual retreat is located amidst mountains and olive groves, and nearby, the sea, for basking in the Sun or for swimming...a 'Heavenly Paradise on Earth' where you can enjoy, synchronously, Culture, Nature and Spirit." The Retreat Centre also allows visitors easy access to nearby ancient Hellenic archeological sites.

Enhumanity Periodical - is the Centre's quarterly international publication, which is published in both English and Hellenic editions.

The New Humanity Centre also offers Full Moon Meditations and international conferences during the year. The New Wisdom School's Second Annual Conference of 1995 will take place Sunday, Sept. 3 through Saturday, Sept. 9. The theme will be "New World Servers Planetary Governance" and topics for discussion will include: "New Aquarian Age & One World Education," "New Humanity Visions and New Values to Live by," "The Divine Plan and the Purpose of Humanity," and "Cooperating with the Spiritual Hierarchy."

Anyone wishing to contact The New Humanity Centre may write to: The New Humanity Centre, Eleonon Road, Akroyali Avias, Kalamata 24100, Greece.

The Call to Service
Learning to meet the need

6) The demonstration of devotion and dedication to a cause greater than oneself. For example, a person might choose to give his time, money and energy to publish a book of the Ageless Wisdom, to create a school for the study of leadership and discipleship, to build a Temple where the Teachings of Love and Light can be distributed, to organize a center through which culture can be nourished, or to build a hospital for healing the hearts of people and bringing greater health to the world.

7) The discipline of study. Study is the science of self-observation, which brings purification and transformation to the physical, emotional and mental bodies. It can help a person assimilate spiritual principles and serve through beingness. Study can help the unfolding human soul become receptive to the love of the Soul and the direction of the Teacher.

Service can be inspired throughout the year by reflecting upon the labors of that great world server Hercules. There is a legend which says that Hercules had the task of gathering the Golden Apples of Hesperides. He was in search of Beauty, Goodness and Truth. His initial efforts ended in failure, but he developed the virtue of humility. Humility is a great service. Next he confronted the serpent and overcame glamour. The dissipation of glamour is a great service. Then, he was bound to an altar for one year by a false teacher. By seeing through the veils of illusion he rendered a great service. As he proceeded, he heard a cry for help from Prometheus. The test of compassion was passed as he stopped to help the one in need. Compassion is a great service. Lastly, he was so very close to the Tree of Knowledge when he saw Atlas carrying the weight of the world upon his shoulders. Hercules sacrificed his search for Truth, selflessly put aside his own plans and goals in order to help Atlas meet the needs of the One Humanity. He cared more about the progress and well-being of others than he did about himself. When Hercules took the burden of the world upon himself, Atlas stood free and handed him the Golden Apples of Truth from the Tree of Life. Hercules responded to the Call of the Soul through loving service.

Q & A
The keys to right Meditation.

Q: I am new to meditation. Can you tell me, what is the best time of the day to meditate and for how long should I do it?

A: For beginners, the time suggested is no longer than 15 minutes; for the second year, 20 minutes; and the third year, 25 minutes. After many years, 30 minutes. The best time for meditation is early morning between dawn and sunrise, but it can be done any time between 4 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Q: Is hypnosis a way to learn meditation?

A: No. Hypnosis is not a path to meditation. When a person is hypnotized he is under the control of another person, and this prevents him from achieving self-mastery. In the case of self-hypnosis, or auto-suggestion, the person is programming his subconscious mind. He becomes mechanical in his actions and, subsequently, comes under the control of his subconscious mind.

A number of years ago a young woman, who was working as a receptionist to a hypnotist, allowed her employer to hypnotize her. The young woman believed it was not possible for anyone to hypnotize her, that she was in total control of her thoughts and actions. After two weeks of working in the office, her boss wanted to prove that he could hypnotize her. Believing it was impossible, she agreed. He used his "technique." With her eyes closed, he asked her to raise one hand over her head while holding her other arm straight out from her waist. The young woman hearing the instruction thought, "No, I am not going to do that." Then she was told to open her eyes. As she opened her eyes, she saw one hand was above her head, while her arm was held straight out from her waist. Her employer proved to her, through the technique of hynosis, that he could control her thoughts and actions. She quit her job saying, "Hypnosis puts people in a state of the unreal; only in Reality can a person be free."

Right meditation is a process which leads a person from the unreal to the Real.

Q: I am experiencing health problems. Will meditating on my problems improve my health?

A: When a person is focused on those he hates, he becomes like those he hates. When a person's thinking is focused on Beauty, he becomes Beauty. By meditating on your problems, you further identify with the problems. Rather than meditating on your health problems, go to the source of health within you the source of light, love and power within you.

There were "two men, living near a creek. One day they smelled gasoline in the water. For many, many days they tried to get rid of the smell by putting the water in a container and leaving it under the rays of the sun or by boiling the water. Then a passerby, who saw what they were doing, said to them, 'The best way to avoid the smell of gas is to go and bring water from the creek's source.' So they went and brought back pure water, and as they were walking alongside the creek , they saw that a four-gallon tin of gas had fallen and was leaking into the water." 1
